Wednesday’s Sikh rally at Jantar Mantar was possibly the largest gathering of Sikhs in Delhi after the April 30 acquittal of Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in a 1984 anti-Sikh riot case.

Sikh organisations mobilised their followers from Delhi, NCR and Punjab to join in Nirpreet Kaur’s indefinite fast demanding justice for the victims of anti-Sikh riots. Kaur is a key witness against Kumar.
By noon, the Jantar Mantar road was packed with 3,000 to 4,000 people waiting for Punjab CM Prakash Singh Badal.
“Possibly, ours is one country which has harassed the community that has contributed so much to this country. Congress used the government machinery to open a front against us,” Badal said and appealed for Sikh unity.
In the wake of the protests, traffic police had to shut down Rafi Marg and Sansad Marg, creating snarls at several points.
