MCD: Implementation of Master Plan 2021 be reviewed in 5 years

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) underlined the need to review the implementation of Master Plan 2021 every five years, citing ‘failure’ of agencies such as the Delhi Development Authority and Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board to provide adequate housing facilities in Delhi as per the Master Plan provisions. MCD’s Master Plan 2021 Implementation Committee chairman Ved Prakash Gupta said the Master Plan 2021 provided for accommodation of population of nearly 1.82 crore by 2011. As per the plan, there were 3.5 lakh new houses to be constructed and about 3.5 lakh dwelling units to be adjusted by developing the existing houses by 2011.

“Of these, about one lakh houses were to be constructed by the Delhi government’s Urban Shelter Improvement Board in the form of multi-storeyed flats at a place where JJ clusters exist. However, nothing has been done so far even after four years of the Master Plan 2021 being notified. This, despite the fact that Delhi’s population has remained at 1.68 crore as against the projected 1.82 crore by 2011 in Master Plan,” he added.

Gupta suggested the Union Urban Development Ministry should intervene and a meeting to review the implementation of MPD 2021 should be held every five years “so that things get corrected on time”.
