MCD online tax system pays rich dividends

This year, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has received the tax online from 97 countries, as Indians living outside the country are increasingly paying their property tax online.

Indians living outside the country are increasingly paying their property tax online. This year, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has received the tax online from 97 countries.

The number of people paying property tax online has increased from 96,890 last year to 2,46,725 this year. A total of 5,000 non-resident Indians (NRI), who own properties in Delhi, have paid their tax online from different countries: 300 from the United States, 466 from the United Kingdom, 227 from Australia, 277 from Singapore, 119 from Canada, 100 from Germany and 91 other countries including Sweden, Switzerland, Japan, China, Kuwait, Norway, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Malaysia, Algeria, Slovakia, Cambodia, and Argentina.

Besides, Indians living in other cities who own properties in Delhi also pay their tax online. “Around 20,000 property taxpayers living in various cities of the country have paid their tax online. The online system of paying tax has become popular not only in Delhi, but also abroad,” said Vijendra Gupta, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the MCD.

The MCD has received property tax from 6,29,278 people until June 30 as compared to 5,72,126 last year. “Of the total, 3,82,552 paid their tax manually and 2,46,725 deposited it online,” added Gupta.

The civic body has collected Rs 422.91 crore as property tax and transfer duty. Last year, it received Rs 382.4 crore. The total recovery of property tax manually was to the tune of Rs 213.77 crore and total recovery from online was Rs 89.6 crore.
