“Many a time, the families take away the Rs 500 given to the children and spend it on something else. That is why we have proposed that the children be given uniforms instead,” said Subhash Arya, Leader of MCD House.

Till 2006, MCD used to give uniforms but after a bungling of funds was detected, the civic body had decided to discontinue with the uniforms and give money instead. However, Rs 5 crore worth of fabrics meant for uniforms are still lying with the MCD. “We are not able to distribute the fabrics and they are lying with us when there are 10 lakh children who can benefit from it. So we have proposed the measure but the Opposition is not agreeing with us,” said Mahendra Nagpal, chairman of education committee.

Arya said that if the preparation starts a year before the session begins, MCD can definitely put the cloth to use. “We also want to bring in more desks for our students,” he said.
