To spread awareness among students, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has decided to educate nearly 10 lakh students on alcohol and nicotine addiction.

Commemorating the 100 years of religious leader Maha Prayag, pamphlets and literature will be distributed among children for better mobilisation of the anti-addiction drive on November 4.
MCD education committee chairman Mahender Nagpal told Hindustan Times,”Anuvrat, an NGO, contacted us with the proposal for the drive and the MCD agreed to it. The programme will be conducted in all schools.”
“Teachers will distribute pamphlets among students on the harmful effects of addiction. Apart from focussing on health issues, the programme aims at helping poor families invest better by saving money spent on buying liquor and other addictives.”
The NGO had requested the MCD to provide them a platform for the drive as they thought children were the best way of spreading the message. “Most of our students come from marginal sections of society where awareness is less. Hence, they can be used as tools to educate their parents about the harmful effects of having pan masala, alcohol, beedis and cigarettes,” he added.
“People might not listen to us but their children can influence their minds,” said Nagpal.
