The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has finalised a plan to widen the road and add footpaths and even a bicycling track to the road leading from Sucheta Kriplani Hospital to RK Mission Metro Station.

At present, the road has been blocked so that the Delhi Jal Board can repair the drainage system running across the road. Once it is done, the road will be taken up by MCD for repair. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation will bear the cost of the project estimated to be Rs 5.40 crore.

“The length of the stretch is about 50 metres but the road is important because it is one of the main feeder roads from various parts of Delhi to Connaught Place,” said a senior official of the MCD. “In the present scheme, it has been proposed to restore and widen the road by metalling and dense carpeting along with construction of footpath, cycle track, bus stands as well as a drainage system on the entire stretch,” he added.

The shops on the road were demolished in view of the Metro route (Blue Line) running through its middle. The traders were asked to shift to a new building that would be constructed at Bhai Veer Singh Marg near St Columba’s School. However, they moved the court in 2006, contending that their shops cannot function in a multi-storey building. Finally, the shops were demolished in November 2010.
