MCD to take IIT help to probe Janakpuri flyover crack

After the Janakpuri flyover breach incident, the MCD is now planning to approach the CRRI and IIT to conduct an enquiry that led to the incident, reports HT Correspondent.

After the Janakpuri flyover breach incident on Tuesday, the MCD is now planning to approach the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) to conduct an enquiry that led to the incident.

“A flyover is supposed to have a life span of nearly 75 years. The Janakpuri flyover was constructed in 2002 and a crack emerging in mere six years is a matter of serious concern. We are going to approach the CRRI and IIT engineers to examine why the incident occurred,” said MCD Commissioner K S Mehra.

The Janakpuri flyover was constructed by the Uttar Pradesh State Bridge Corporation, but the civic body has admitted that it is the MCD’s responsibility to maintain the flyovers. There are a total of 26 flyovers that fall in MCD limits. Mehra added that yearly inspection would be carried out of all the MCD flyovers to detect similar cracks. The civic body would repair Sewa Nagar flyover, Janak Setu, Ashok Vihar, Tilak Nagar, Zakira, Shahdara, Deshbandhu Gupta, and Shyamlal college flyovers soon.

The civic body is also planning to create an underground duct through which all the pipelines can pass so that the damage done by road cutting can be reduced.
