Against the target of Rs.581 crore, the south Corporation has already collected Rs.340 crore till November.

The officials said the total cost of the reward scheme would amount to Rs.71.56 lakh, which would be less than 0.5% against the possible realisation of Rs.154.21 crore as property tax. The employees working with SDMC will be eligible to avail this scheme.

SDMC has set a target of collecting Rs.581 crore as property tax during the current financial year (2012-13).

The amount of Rs.154.21 crore is around 34% higher than Rs.426.79 crore accrued as property tax from areas under the south Corporation during the last financial year.

“Under the scheme, each zone will be considered as one unit and if the zone and the head quarter achieve the target fixed for the current fiscal year, then all the employees of the property tax department will be eligible for the reward,” a senior official said.

Also, the SDMC has decided to reopen the cases of around 40,000 property owners who have not been paying property tax for years, even after the self-assessment method was introduced in 2004.

As per civic body estimates, the corporation expects to raise Rs.600 crore as property tax from these 40,000 properties.
