A case of negligence has been registered against "unknown people" in the Delhi Metro breakdown incident where some passengers broke open the emergency doors of a train and walked on the tracks at a risk to their lives, police said on Monday.

"We have registered a case under section 337 (negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against unknown people as the incident could have led to a major tragedy. We would be examining role of all the stakeholders of Delhi Metro as well as people," a senior Delhi Police official told IANS.

The case was registered at the Delhi Metro's Rajouri Garden police station late on Sunday.

Hundreds of passengers had a harrowing time when the train they were travelling on Dwarka-Yamuna Bank line got struck for nearly two hours between the elevated RK Ashram Marg and the underground Rajiv Chowk Metro stations following the power failure on Sunday afternoon.

People ignored the train operator's announcements to remain calm and forced open both the emergency doors, coming out on the tracks on both directions and walking to the next Metro stations.

Metro authorities immediately stopped movement of trains on both sides.
