The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), which started its journey on an 8-km-long stretch from Shahdara to Tis Hazari in 2002, has come a long way in these nine years. Metro, which has become synonymous with Delhi, has emerged as an affordable means of transport.
The year 2011 has been remarkable for the Delhi Metro. This year, the DMRC has added 34.52km to its network, taking its total length to more than 190 km. Several additions have been made to the Metro network, including the world-class, high-speed Airport Metro Express.
According to the DMRC, 2011 has been a 'year of transition' as the organisation has started work on phase 3 project, which will cover 117km. Phase 3 will see Metro's expansion in NCR.
This year, the corporation has also achieved the highest-ever ridership of more than 20 lakh passengers. In 2010, the Delhi Metro highest ridership was slightly more than 16 lakh.
Some of the major highlights of 2011 include extension of the Central Secretariat-Sarita Vihar corridor to Badarpur (January 14), opening of the Airport Express Link (February 23), extension of Metro services to Vaishali in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh (July 14), opening of Dhaula Kuan and Delhi Aerocity stations of the Airport Express Link (August 15) and opening of Kirti Nagar-Ashok Park Main link (August 27), among others.
"This year, the DMRC has been involved in planning the next phase of Metro construction. On April 11, the Delhi government approved the construction Metro route under phase 3. Later, the empowered group of ministers of the central government gave their go ahead for the next phase," said a DMRC spokesperson.
