Metro’s designers blacklisted for Zamrudpur mishap

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on Tuesday blacklisted the firm Arch Consultancy Services Private Ltd for its faulty design that was purportedly responsible for the mishap on July 12 and 13 at Zamrudpur on the up-going Central Secretariate-Badarpur Line, reports HT Correspondent.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on Tuesday blacklisted the firm Arch Consultancy Services Private Ltd for its faulty design that was purportedly responsible for the mishap on July 12 and 13 at Zamrudpur on the up-going Central Secretariate-Badarpur Line.

The DMRC action comes “after detailed examination of the process of design, contract, enquiry report findings, memorandum of charges and replies furnished by M/s Arch Consultancy Services Pvt Ltd,” Metro officials said.

As many as six persons were killed and 21 injured in the July 12 incident at Zamrudpur when an under-construction metro line collapsed due to “design fault” in pier 67 and in the subsequent day’s mishap after the crane involved in site clearance overturned.

Claiming that the design consultants Arch Consultancy and its sister concerns/partners worked in detriment to the interest of DMRC, the Metro officials said the firm has been blacklisted for a period of minimum 5 years from doing any business with DMRC or as DDC (Detailed Design Consultants) through any contractor working under DMRC.

The firm shall also be removed from all running contracts, the official said. “Other engineering organizations dealing in similar design works will be informed of this decision by DMRC.”

The DMRC is also likely to take strict action against contractors M/S Gammon India Ltd and senior DMRC staff, Metro officials said.

While Gammon was issued a show-cause notice DMRC Chief Engineer (Design) Rajan Kataria was slapped a major penalty charge sheet.

Earlier on July 28, after accepting in toto the findings of the three-member committee, which investigated the accident, the DMRC had said it initiated action against several firms/people, who wereallegedly responsible for the mishap.
