After the international terminal, it's domestic terminal's turn to be on Delhi's Metro map. The domestic terminal (T1D) of the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) is going to get Metro connectivity in Phase 3, which is scheduled to be completed by 2016.
At present, the showcase 22-km airport expressline provides high-speed metro connectivity to the new terminal 3 (T3) of the IGIA that mostly caters to international fliers as well as those who travel by premium domestic aircrafts.
The proposed Metro line connecting Janakpuri West and Botanical Garden would go through the domestic airport (T1D) enabling domestic fliers to take the Metro to go to the airport.
"The new line will benefit thousands of low-cost air fliers from across the city as the proposed 39-km line would pass through almost all major existing corridors," said Anuj Dayal, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) spokesperson.
About 150 flights operate from the domestic terminal everyday catering to an average of 15,000 people. The new line will have 24 stations and interchange options on line 3/4 (Noida-Anand Vihar-Dwarka) at Janakpuri West and Botanical Garden, line 2 (Gurgaon-Jahangirpuri) at Hauz Khas and line 6 (Central Secretariat-Badarpur) at Nehru Place and Kalkaji.
"Your travel to the domestic airport would not only be less time consuming, it would be cost effective as well. From Noida if you take a cab for the airport, you pay around R500 and reach the airport in more than an hour. But if you commute by Metro, you will pay not more than R30 and spend just 35 minutes to reach the airport," said a senior DMRC official.
