After completion of phase 3 in 2016, millions of people will be able to walk down to the nearest Metro stations to catch trains.

“Residents of many residential colonies will get Metro stations within 500m of their area,” said Anuj Dayal, spokesperson of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). “In phase 4, we will try and provide last-mile connectivity to commuters of all other major colonies and thus decongest roads to a large extent.”

The residential colonies which will get Metro stations include Mukundpur and Sadar Bazar in north Delhi, Ashram, Vinobapuri, Hazrat Nizamuddin, Vasant Vihar, Munirka, RK Puram, IIT, Panchsheel Park, Chirag Delhi, Okhla Phase 3, Ishwar Nagar, Jamia Nagar and Kalindi Kunj in south Delhi, Trilokpuri, Vinod Nagar and IP Extension in east Delhi, Jaffrabad, Yamuna Vihar and Shiv Vihar in northeast Delhi, Dabri Mor and Palam in southwest Delhi and Badli Mor, Badli and Rohini sectors 18 and 19 in outer Delhi. “Our former MD (E Sreedharan) had a vision of bringing Metro within a 500-m radius of every home in Delhi by 2021. The commuters should be able to walk down to the nearest Metro station like they do in Tokyo, London and Shanghai,” Dayal added.

In Delhi, even after completion of phase 2, a major concern within commuters has been of last-mile connectivity. The difficulty in reaching the nearest Metro station from their homes has restrained hundreds of people from using Metro on daily basis.

As per plans under phase 4, another 114 km is proposed to be added to the fleet, covering many residential areas.
