Delhi’s cricket buffs have reasons to cheer. Delhi Metro is all set to take them closer to the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium. Three years down the line, they will not have to face parking woes to watch an IPL or an international cricket match.

One of the gates of the proposed Dilli Gate Metro station on the underground Central Secretariat-Kashmere Gate corridor has been strategically planned just ahead of the petrol pump on the Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg.
The station will be less than 100 metres from the stadium, which is presently hosting IPL matches. The construction of the corridor is on. “This gate will be close to the west stand of the stadium,” said Anuj Dayal, spokesperson of DMRC.
The stadium can accommodate up to 50,000 people. During matches, it is usually packed to capacity. Through this station, Delhi Metro plans to cater to at least 60-70 per cent of the cricket buffs.
A recent DMRC traffic survey has revealed that about 40,000 people prefer taking the Metro to catch a cricket match.
Once the Dilli Gate station becomes operational, DMRC also plans to run special trains or extend the timing of its operations on the eve of a match based on the demands of commuters. “These arrangements will be required when IPL matches continue late into the night,” said a DMRC spokesperson.

Presently, Pragati Maidan is the nearest Metro station to the stadium and is at least 3km away. The distance keeps most cricket buffs away from the Metro on the eve of a match.
This, despite the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium suffering from inadequate parking space.
The nearby areas of ITO, Daryaganj and Dilli Gate are traditional business hubs, where most parking lots are jam-packed even on non-match days.
“Metro will provide a huge relief not only to the common people or cricket buffs, but to us as well. It gets difficult for us to manage traffic or make parking arrangements during match days,” said Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner of police (traffic).
