“Every child admitted to pre-school shall be of minimum three years of age by March 31 of the year in which the admission is sought,” the circular said.

The circular also mentioned that the minimum age for pre-primary classes, which are immediately prior to Class I, will remain four years. The age criteria have been a sore point for many schools as well as parents, owing to lack of clarity in the past two months.

Last year, human resource development minister Kapil Sibal had last year suggested that children seeking nursery admission in Delhi should be more than four years old. But Delhi education minister, Arvinder Singh Lovely had said the age criterion for Delhi children is discriminatory.

“The age limit, if implemented, should be done throughout the country and not only in Delhi. So, it should remain three years and above,” said Singh.

The DoE had first come out with the notification in the last week of October, saying that children who are of minimum three years of age shall be eligible for admission to nursery.
