MLAs demand protection from criminals

Delhi's Members of legislative assembly (MLAs) have come together to demand "protection against criminals" following an extortion call to the son of Narela MLA Jaspal Rana.

On Friday, the MLAs trooped to the well of the House, asking for immediate protection.

The Narela MLA said his son got a call from some unknown person demanding R50 lakh. He said though a case was registered, no progress has been made till now.

Reiterating the demand for personal security officer for MLAs, Matia Mahal MLA Shoaib Iqbal also said some unknown people had damaged his car on Friday. Bawana MLA Surinder Kumar said security must be provided to the legislators so that they can function "fearlessly".

The MLAs also found a support in Delhi assembly speaker Yoganand Shastri, who promised to take up the issue with the police commissioner.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit told reporters that security of MLAs was of "paramount importance and the incident involving the Narela MLA was being taken up with the police seriously". "The police have been informed about the incident," Dikshit said.
