Mulayam in trouble as SC admits BSP petition

Signaling fresh trouble for Mulayam Singh Yadav, the Supreme Court on Monday admitted petitions by BSP leaders challenging the quashing of charges against the Samajwadi Party leader and others in connection with an assault on Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati in 1995.

A bench headed by Chief Justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan admitted the petitions filed by BSP’s Barkhuram Verma and Ram Achal Rajbhar after senior counsel K.K. Venugopal and UP Additional Advocate General Shail Dwivedi said the state deliberately chose not to challenge the quashing of charges during Mulayam’s rule.

Verma, a former state BSP president, has since died while Rajbhar is transport minister in the present Mayawati government.

The court fixed May first week to hear the petitions challenging the quashing of charges against Mulayam, his brother Shivpal Singh Yadav, SP leaders Azam Khan, Beni Prasad Verma, Masood Ahmed, Dhani Ram Verma and others for the Lucknow guest house attack.

The petitions also question an Allahabad HC decision quashing several other charges against Mulayam and others in two separate cases — under the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and provisions of the Indian Penal Code and Prevention of Corruption Act.

The court decision comes at a time when Mulayam and three of his family members are facing a disproportionate assets probe by the CBI.
