Contrary to what the Delhi police would have us believe, the National Capital saw a spurt in heinous crimes like murder in 2008.
Compared with last year, murder incidents in the city saw a 10 per cent increase. Areas like Seemapuri, Dilshad Garden, Nand Nagri, Shahadra and Bhajanpura in north-east district recording the highest number of murder cases at 84. The lowest number of murder cases, 49, was reported from northwest district that comprises areas like Mukherjee Nagar, Model Town, Pitampura and Shalimar Bagh.
These crime figures have been compiled by Delhi Police and are for the period between January and November 2008.
The Delhi Police can, however, take solace from the fact other grave crimes like rape have declined by as much as 5 per cent as compared with 2007. Even robbery incidents have dipped by 23 per cent compared with last year.
Till November 30 this year, 557 cases of murders were registered in the capital; last year the figure stood at 505.
An analysis of murder cases last year revealed that "passion killing" had topped the list with 16 per cent of murder cases being attributed to it. Sudden provocation accounted for 14 per cent of the murder cases and property-related disputes led to 11 per cent murder cases.
There was a decline in rape cases this year. While last year, 580 cases of rape were recorded, this year the figure stood at 446, a decline of 23.27 per cent. The police said in 98.28 per cent cases, the accused was known to the victim. Eighteen per cent cases were related to elopement where the victim and accused were known to each other. No rape cases were reported from 19 police stations. This year, east Delhi topped the list with 65 rape cases while the lowest number of rape cases, 38, was recorded from northeast district.
