Nariman too seeks probe against ex-CJI Sabharwal

The Communist Party of India (CPI) and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) have also joined the demand for an investigation, reports Nagendar Sharma.

The demand for an inquiry into the allegations of misconduct against former chief justice of India YK Sabharwal grew louder on Monday with noted constitutional expert Fali S Nariman coming out in support of a probe.

The Communist Party of India (CPI) and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) have also joined the demand for an investigation.

“Since the matter is in public domain now and does not only concern a former judge, it is a serious matter which concerns the entire judiciary. Thus, let there be a probe to find out all the facts,” Nariman told HT.

Earlier, in an interview to a TV channel, Nariman said: “If a large section of people including two former chief justices think there should be an inquiry, I think it would be proper for the former chief justice concerned to voluntarily say ‘let there be a probe’.”

He also criticised the Delhi High Court’s decision to sentence the Mid Day journalists to four months’ imprisonment for contempt of court. “The decision was wrong and that is why it has been stayed by the SC. Nothing that is true can scandalise,” Nariman said.

“It is a serious matter as the name of a former chief justice is involved. There should be an inquiry by competent authorities. This is not a case which pertains to an individual, it is about the prestige of the judiciary,” said D Raja, CPI national secretary.
