Next June, crossing roads will be safer

The Public Works Department (PWD) has called for tenders to construct 34 foot over bridges (FOBs) across the Capital.

Senior PWD officials said these FOBs have been planned close to upcoming flyover projects.

Officials said these FOBs would be integrated with flyovers and road projects using escalators and lifts.

Pedestrians are the most vulnerable road users in Delhi. Over 1,200 pedestrians are killed in the Capital annually in road accidents.

The stretch of Outer Ring Road between Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) campus and Rao Tula Ram Marg, Naraina, Azadpur, Ghazipur Crossing, Apsara Border and Shyam Lal College flyover are some projects where these FOBs will come up.

PWD officials said all these bridges would be completed by June 2010.

Senior PWD officials said they had identified another 35 locations across the city where FOBs will be built. Most of these spots, said officials, exist on busy stretches of Ring Road, outer Ring Road, Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, Delhi portion of National Highway 24 and some other congested arterial roads.
