No takers for MCD's 60 new parking lots

The Capital's parking space is all set to shrink further. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) had called tenders for 108 parking lots in the city, but has still not received any response for as many as 60 lots.

These 60 surface parking lots would have created space for at least 6,000 vehicles. Many of them are located in areas such as South Extension, Defence Colony, Saket, Lajpat Nagar, Munirka, Rajouri Garden, Vasant Kunj and Janakpuri.

The MCD currently runs 116 surface parking lots in the city.

Officials said the new conditions introduced by the civic agency have deterred contractors from participating in the tender process.

The bad news is that in the absence of a contractor, these lots will be easy targets for the parking mafia, who will run them illegally.

"We are planning to convene a pre-bid meeting with the contractors to find out the problems. Also, the tenders which have been allotted to contractors will be made functional soon," said SA Khan, who is in charge of the MCD's remunerative project department.
