During the morning rush hour at the Rajiv Chowk Metro station on Saturday, the hustle and bustle of thousands reflected the pace of city life. But time had paused at one corner of the Metro station as a bright red wall honouring Nobel laureates of the country was installed jointly by the ambassador of Sweden to India, Harald Sandbarg, and the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) managing director, Mangu Singh.
The Nobel Wall, which will be there for commuters to take a look at for a week, has portraits of the seven Nobel laureates from India.
On a red background, Rabindranath Tagore, CV Raman, Dr Har Gobind Khorana, Mother Teresa, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, Amartya Sen and Venkatraman Ramakrishnan stand tall. Their brief, two-paragraph-long biographies are inscribed in bold letters.
"It is an opportunity for the youth to know about our Nobel laureates while they are on the move," Singh said. Nobel laureates had brought India international recognition and the Generation Next should be inspired by them.
The wall, which will be also on display at Noida City Centre Metro station till next Friday, is part of the Sweden-India Nobel Memorial Week.
Sandberg said, "For six years now, the embassy of Sweden and Swedish companies celebrate The Sweden-India Memorial Week, where we pay tribute to the contribution of Alfred Nobel and Indian Nobel laureates, and highlight the importance of innovations. This year the theme being Co-creating the Future, what better way to begin than to reach out to the 1.8 million commuters through the innovation in public transport system that has changed the face of the city?"
