Nod for 150 posts of judicial officers

The Delhi Cabinet on Monday cleared a proposal to create 150 new posts for judicial officers to expedite the justice delivery system. The cabinet also cleared a proposal to create 1,085 new posts of supporting staff to increase the number of courts.

According to officials, of the 150 new posts, 50 posts will be created for higher judicial services, which include judges of sessions and district ranks. Heinous offences such as murder, rape, kidnapping, etc inviting punishment of more than seven years are tried by the sessions courts.

The remaining 100 posts will be created for metropolitan magistrates (MM), who deal with cases inviting punishment of less than seven years. These include cases of cheating, fraud, cheque bounce, white colour crimes, molestation, etc.

The 1085 other posts will be of support staff such as reader, peons etc.

In the current set-up, each judge gets seven support staff members. The proposal means an extra expense of Rs 22.75 crore per annum.

"The posts were necessary for all future requirements for setting up of courts as per orders of the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court. The recruitment of ancillary staff shall be done in a phased manner, commensurate with the number of new judicial officer recruited," said Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.
