To mark the World TB Day on Thursday, the Noida tuberculosis department of district hospital held a workshop for medical staff to educate them how to ensure quick treatment for patients in rural areas.

More than 50 staff working at various health centres attended the workshop which was held at the district hospital here.

"Health workers were told to send blood and swab samples of patients to laboratories to ensure early detection of the disease and provide quick treatment to the patients," said Vijay Deepak Verma, the chief medial officer (CMO) of the district hospital.

In order to strengthen measures to fight the disease, the department has authorised village health centres and ASHA workers to send blood samples of suspected TB patients directly to the main laboratory in Noida, the CMO said.

Dayawati, the district tuberculosis officer (DTO) of Gautam Buddha Nagar, said the success rate of treating TB patients reached 99% last year.

The district has three TB treatment units. The Noida and Dankore units have four laboratories for examining patients' samples while the third unit at Dadri has three labs.

Verma said: "Two more treatment centres have been approved which will start functioning by next month."
