Opposition plans alternative JPC report to pin govt

Sensing an opportunity to nail the UPA government on the 2G scam ahead of the 2014 election, opposition parties like the Left and the BJP are mulling the option of pitting an alternative report against the draft JPC report, which has given a clean chit to the Prime Minister and the finance minister in the 2G scam.

Top Left leaders already contacted BJP leaders such as Yashwant Sinha and Ravi Shankar Prasad to chalk out a strategy. CPI also opened channel with Trinamool, the UPA’s estranged ally.

No JPC has debated an alternative report, though there had been several notes of dissent.

The opposition also plans to disrupt proceedings of the upcoming Parliament session — to begin on April 22—over the alleged “leak” of the JPC report.

The Congress-led UPA has 12 MPs—including chairman PC Chacko who can cast an additional vote in a case of tie—in the 30-member JPC. But to endorse the official draft, the UPA will have to heavily depend on the BSP and the SP. The UPA is also trying to get tacit support from JD(U) and Trinamool.

CPI’s Gurudas Dasgupta claimed, “Several instances establish that the PM deliberately did not act. He didn’t consider cabinet secretary KM Chandrasekhar’s views that each license should be priced at R8,700 crore.”

BJP’s Ravi Shankar Prasad dubbed the draft report “a Congress document” to save its leaders.

Raja has threatened to submit a 100-page note.
