Pak minister thanks PC, Rahat may get away with fine
Pakistan interior minister Rahman Malik on Tuesday thanked home minister P Chidambaram for the release of renowned singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, who was detained by revenue enforcement authorities at the IGI airport here for allegedly carrying foreign currency beyond permissible limits. HT reports.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan singer is expected to be fined for the violation of Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) violation, provided the investigations don’t unearth further links, government sources indicated. The jail term comes into picture only if the singer fails to pay the fine.
Malik also assured Chidambaram of Khan’s full cooperation in the matter in accordance with the law.
“The interior and home ministers of Pakistan and India spoke to each other today (Tuesday). Interior minister, Mr. Rehman Malik thanked Indian home minister P Chidambaram for extending his assistance and cooperation in regard to the matter relating to Qawwali Singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan”, a statement from Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi said.
“He (Malik) also assured him (Chidambaram) of Rahat’s full cooperation in the matter, in accordance with the law of the land”, the statement added.
The government has also decided to extend the singer’s visa and home secretary GK Pillai said the matter would come up for adjudication on February 17.
“His visa has expired. His visa will be extended,” Pillai told reporters on the sidelines of a function here. Khan's passport has already been surrender and he has been directed to appear before the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence on February 17.
“We hope that post 17th (February), there could be adjudication proceeding and we hope that the matter would be resolved,” he said.
