Development comes at a price and Delhiites will have to undergo inconvenience while commuting as phase 3 of the Metro network gathers momentum.
Work on the R35,000-crore project — to add 120 km to the existing 190-km network — which began last November, is expected to pick up pace in the next few weeks. The project is to be completed in 2016.Till then, many busy arterial roads will have diversions and remain congested (see box).
“Traffic management would really be a huge challenge when these roads would be partially occupied by the DMRC (Delhi Metro Rail Corporation) for construction work. We hope the situation won’t go fully out of control,” said Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner of police (traffic).
The traffic police are in the final stage of examining the DMRC proposals for traffic management and are expected to give their go-ahead within a week.
“Once clearance is given, we can plan construction on the Ring Road. Work on the Mandi House-Delhi Gate stretch will start sometime this month,” said DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal.
