Commuters had a tough time at Ashoka Road on Saturday as part of the road was barricaded for carrying out repair work of a water pipeline by NDMC. As a result, there was a huge traffic jam on the entire stretch.
According to New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) officials, a water pipeline was breached which caused leakage and the civic body had to carry out repair work.
Work on repairing the pipeline continued throughout the day and officials said that it would be repaired by Sunday evening. The traffic was diverted as barricading was carried out on the stretch.
A senior NDMC official said a 16-inch water pipeline was breached after the Electronics Corporation of India (ECIL) installed underground cables using trenchless technology.
“The ECIL was laying cables to put up Closed Circuit Television Cameras (CCTVs) in the city when they punctured the main water pipeline. We are carrying out repair work and the stretch will be open completely on Sunday,” he said.
According to the Delhi Traffic Police, it took them three hours to clear the traffic. “The pipeline got burst after some cable work was being carried out. Half of the stretch was barricaded and our traffic marshals were present on the stretch to guide the commuters. The situation was under control,” said Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner of police (traffic).
