Assam Governor Syed Sibtey Razi has been asked to resign by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh following CBI raids which confirmed allegations of corruption against his aides and staff during his tenure as governor of Jharkhand.

According to media reports, the Prime Minister tried to persuade Razi to quit on “moral” grounds as an official recall order would have meant further embarrassment for the UPA government, since it requires the President to issue a notification following recommendation from the Union Cabinet.

Razi's former aides Rajesh Thakur and IAS officer Avinash Kumar are under the scanner for having amassed assets and misused funds meant for 34th National Games to be held in Jharkhand.

Razi had taken over as the Governor of Assam in July, 2009.
