Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK patriarch M. Karunanidhi got an assurance from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee would travel to Sri Lanka to press for a ceasefire between forces and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and resumption of dialogue.
“I requested the PM to send Mukherjee to issue a strong warning to the Sri Lankan government to announce a ceasefire immediately and to hold peaceful negotiations with them,” Karunanidhi told reporters here after meeting Singh, along with a multi-party delegation from the state.
“The Prime Minister agreed to send the foreign minister to Sri Lanka and told me he would travel as soon as possible,” he said.
Karunanidhi, who is under fire from other parties in the state for “doing little” to stop the war, said the PM would consult him on who would accompany Mukherjee.
On whether he thought Mukherjee's visit would solve the issue, he said, “I believe there will some solution. We all live in belief.”
The DMK chief also met Congress president Sonia Gandhi. He denied that suspended DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran would be inducted into the Cabinet again. “There is no plan now. We will see during the next elections. A decision will be taken after the elections, not now.”
