Police officer defends Sajjan Kumar

A serving Delhi police officer has defended senior Congress leader Sajjan Kumar, facing trial in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case, in a court here saying one of the complainants Jagdish Kaur had declined to join the probe.

A serving Delhi police officer has defended senior Congress leader Sajjan Kumar, facing trial in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case, in a court here saying one of the complainants Jagdish Kaur had declined to join the probe.

Inspector Sunil Kumar Vashisth told the court that Kaur had refused to identify any of the accused and also expressed her wish not to take any action against the alleged rioters.

"During January, 2003, I myself went to Amritsar and I apprised her in writing that her statement is required to be recorded and she should join the investigation. Jagdish Kaur declined to join the investigation and she gave in writing through her daughter that she cannot identify anybody and she does not wish any action in this regard and whatever is decided will be acceptable to her," Vashisth said before additional sessions judge Sunita Gupta.

Sajjan Kumar, along with five others, is facing trial for allegedly instigating a mob which killed six persons in Delhi Cantonment area during the riots in the wake of the assassination of erstwhile Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
