At the JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) presidential debate on Wednesday, the Kudankulam nuclear plant, Assam violence and privatisation of education were discussed at length.

But, it was the plan to host beef-and-pork festival on campus that generated heat. Candidates and voters almost came to blows when an aspirant abused The New Materialists, the festival’s hosts. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad has gone to the police for action against the organisers.

Crackdown on photocopied books, attendance rules and lack of hostels are DUSU poll issues. But, canvassing wasn’t so hardnosed — chocolates, paper-soaps and notebooks with party slogans were all employed to woo voters.

Bundled with the promise of pick-and-drop ‘facility’ for latest flicks and a trip to amusement parks —some candidates believe they’ve cracked the code. We’ll know it today.
