East Delhi has seen a rise in the number of incidents of crimes. Both the east Delhi Police and the area residents cite poorly lit stretches and unmanned border points as the main factors behind this trend.

Delhi Police claims to have deployed its men at every entry and exit point of the city. Nevertheless, incidents of criminals coming from across the border and fleeing away after committing a crime are on the rise.
“Apart from the main link road, there are at least five small roads that connect Noida to Delhi. Criminals have easy access to the apartments located in New Ashok Nagar, Mayur Vihar Phase-1 and Mayur Vihar extension due to porous borders,” Virendra Arora, a resident of Kiran Vihar said.
Another big problem is the poorly lit stretches outside the apartment complexes. Going out after dark is fraught with risks, they say. “The civic agency has installed streetlights but the poles are covered with trees. As a result, the stretch remains dark,” H Ramachandran of Samachar Apartments said.
Asif Mohammed, additional DCP (east) said, “Every month, we identify dark stretches and send the list of non-functional streetlights to BSES. They are bound to send us an action-taken report.”
