Posing as cops, three rob trader, flee with Rs 12 lakh in Delhi

Pramod Kumar Jain, who runs a grocery store and deals in real estate, had gone to give Rs 2 lakh loan to the nephew of one of his friends, when three robbers abducted him in a car and extorted Rs 10 lakh from him, besides getting away with Rs 2 lakh.

Posing as policemen on the trail of illegal money hoarders, three men abducted a 50-year-old grocery store owner from east Delhi’s Karkardooma in a car and robbed him of Rs 12 lakh. They also extorted Rs 10 lakh by threatening to frame him in a case of stashing new banknotes.

Police said the money was in the denomination of Rs 100 and new Rs 2,000 and Rs 500 banknotes. The incident took place on Saturday.

Omvir Singh, deputy commissioner of police (east), said, “A case under relevant sections of the IPC has been registered against unknown persons.”

The police are also probing the role of a nephew of a friend of the victim, Pramod Kumar Jain. The nephew had asked Jain for a loan of Rs 2 lakh.

A senior police officer said they were also questioning Jain as to how he managed to get Rs 10 lakh in new notes. Police suspect that the new notes were arranged through “illegal” means. The police have also not ruled out the role of some bank officials, who allegedly exchange old currency notes with new ones for a considerable commission for businessmen.

“Jain reached the spot on his scooter. Aman was there with three men. As soon as Jain took out the bag of money, the three men snatched the bag from him. Aman fled the spot and the three overpowered Jain. They told him that they were policemen,” said the officer.

They dragged Jain into a Wagaon R car. They said they will him to the local police station because he got new currency notes from illegal means. “They took Jain for a ride and on the way and told him that they will frame him, if they were not paid Rs 25 lakh. When Jain resisted, one of them pulled out a pistol and threatened to kill him,” said the officer. Jain agreed to pay Rs 10 lakh.

Bittu sent his staff with the money near the Vivek Vihar underpass. The accused took the money and left the place with Jain in the car. Jain was dropped near the Jagatpuri traffic signal, said police.
