President appoints Navin Chawla as next CEC

Election Commissioner Navin Chawla will take over as the next Chief Election Commissioner on April 20, said a Rashtrapati Bhawan spokesperson. He will succeed N Gopalaswami who will retire on the same day.

The present CEC N Gopalaswamy will retire on April 20, 2009.

President Pratibha Devi Singh Patil on Wednesday appointed Chawla as the next Chief Election Commissioner with effect from April 20, said a Rashtrapati Bhawan spokesperson.

"The President has approved the appointment of Navin Chawla as the Chief Election Commissioner with effect from April 20 on completion of the tenure of N Gopalaswami," a Rashtrapati Bhavan communique said here today.
