Promised job, NRI abducted, cheated of Rs. 10 lakh
A 27-year-old Non-Resident Indian (NRI), working as a chef in Ghana, has complained that he was abducted and duped of Rs. 9 lakh by his acquaintance after being a promised a better job. His complaint has been lodged at the Sarojini Nagar police station.

The victim, Kundan Kumar, alleged that the acquaintance and his accomplices took him to Bagdogra in West Bengal. There, they kept him locked in a room and released him only after his family members paid them Rs. 9 lakh. A case has been registered and investigation is on, said a senior police officer.
In his complaint, Kumar said during his visit to India in July, he met his brother-in-law Sanjay Kumar's friend Prakash Magar. "Magar claimed that he could arrange a well-paying job for him in Canada. Kumar agreed to pay him Rs. 10 lakh for it. Then he left for Ghana on August 17," said the officer.
A few days later, Kumar received a job letter from a Canadian hotel attached through email and told to come to Delhi to complete the formalities. Kumar returned to Delhi on September 28, and was told that he would have to catch the flight to Canada from Kolkata. He flew to Kolkata on September 29, where he met Magar and two other persons.
On October 1, Magar offered Kumar a drink after which he lost consciousness. Later, he found himself in a hotel room.
"Kumar alleged that he was beaten up at gunpoint. They forced him to contact his father and brother-in-law and ask them to sell their property in Mundka to arrange for Rs. 10 lakh. Magar also contacted them and claimed that Kumar could be deported from Canada. The family deposited Rs. 9 lakh in the bank account which Magar gave them. Later, Kumar was released in a tea plantation in Bagdogra," said the officer.
Kumar flew back after his family arranged a ticket for him.
