They said a mobile phone, which helped the Bangkok Police nab three Iranian men allegedly involved in a similar bid there, was instrumental in leading to Qazmi’s arrest.
Sources said Qazmi's number figured on the callers' list of one of the three Iranians arrested by the Bangkok Police. One of these was Saied Moradi, 28, the Iranian national who accidentally blew himself up while trying to throw an explosive at the Bangkok Police on February 14.
“Moradi's phone led the Bangkok Police to arrest two men: Madani Seyed Mehrded, 33 and Muhammad Khazaei, 42, who was caught trying to board a flight from Bangkok. The list of dialled and received calls of all three phones have Qazmi's number,” said a senior police officer.
Government sources said Police Commissioner BK Gupta and officers handling the investigation briefed home secretary RK Singh about the circumstances and evidence that formed the basis of Qazmi's arrest.
Meanwhile, police sources admitted that they are still in the process of verifying Qazmi's exact role in the 'conspiracy' and insist that his role is merely that of a 'facilitator', not a mastermind.
”Moradi had allegedly contacted both Mehrded and Khazaei repeatedly on the day of the Bangkok bombings. Both of them were nabbed by the local police. Qazmi had also been contacted and made calls to one of the numbers the same morning," the officer said without disclosing which one of the trio.
