One person seated next to the driver was killed when their car rammed a tree in Mandir Marg area of New Delhi district in the early hours of Friday.

The victim, Mohammad Saleem, 25 was travelling in a silver Opel Astra car with four friends when it hit a tree after the driver lost control.

Saleem owned a meat shop in the Idgah area of Old Delhi.

The police suspect that the occupants of the car were drunk and were racing their vehicle with two other cars in which some other friends were travelling.

The driver of the car, Abdul Rehman (24), was severely injured. The other occupants —Mohammad Wasim (24), Wasim (18) and Abid (28) — were also injured. All are residents of Sadar Bazaar and are into meat business.

Police said the accident happened around 1:25 am on Friday. The car was racing with two more cars when the car hit a speed breaker and lost control near the Peshwa Road T-Junction. It then hit the pavement before ramming a tree.

Police took the injured to Lady Hardinge Hospital. From there, they were referred to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. Saleem’s body has been sent for postmortem.

“He was the youngest son in the family. His father has passed away. He was a responsible boy and was looking after the business well,” said Mohammed Bilal, uncle of the deceased.

The police said the group was returning from a pub.

A case has been registered and statements of the three occupants of the car who suffered minor injuries were being recorded.
