Rains bring Delhi to its knees yet again

Delhi was left submerged on Saturday after rains lashed various parts of the city. But the chaos was not caused due to the rains but by tonnes of building material strewn at the Commonwealth Games (CWG) sites and on the streets.

Some of the worst affected areas in the city were Akbar Road, Tolstoy Marg, Mayur Vihar, Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway, Lutyens Zone and Model Town.

Water gushed inside the premises of the Nehru Stadium as workers at the spot tried to flush the water out. Shivaji Stadium and Chatrasal Stadium were also waterlogged. A recently constructed parking lot outside Talkatora stadium also caved in.

The downpour washed away tall claims made by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) of having completed de-silting of the1,500 storm water drains under them.

The debris, which is yet to be removed by the civic bodies added to the chaos and made its way inside the storm water drains choking it further. Connaught Place became inaccessible as the whole area lies dug up and construction materials blocked roads.

Three people were injured when a building collapsed in Paharganj area and one received injuries due to a wall collapse in the Rama Krishna Ashram Marg area.

The police said the owner of the house had illegally extended the front portion of the house.
