“The crime situation will be totally under control,” the police chief assured.

Dadwal’s promise to rein in crime over the next year came after Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram announced his ministry’s decision to raise the number of police stations in Delhi by over 20 per cent.

“The government has sanctioned additional manpower of 6,478 policemen and 29 new police stations at a cost of Rs 199 crore per annum,” Chidambaram announced at his monthly briefing on Tuesday to list the ministry’s initiatives.

With the addition, the minister said, the total number of police stations in the Capital will increase to 155.

Delhi Police has another 14 police stations for wings like Crime Branch, Economic Offences, Delhi Metro, Special Cell, Crime Against Women Cell, Narcotics and Indira Gandhi International Airport.

The government has also sanctioned nine sub-divisions to be headed by an Assistant Commissioner of Police. At present there are 44 sub divisions.

The 6,478 new personnel include nine ACPs, 87 Inspectors, 535 Sub-Inspectors, 168 Assistant Sub-Inspectors, 1,588 Head Constables and 3,677 Constables. “This will incur an expense of Rs 199.15 crore every year,” Chidambaram said.

The new sanctioned posts also include 29 Head Constables (drivers), 57 Constables (drivers), 168 Assistant Wireless Operators and five Inspectors (Ministerial), 21 Sub-Inspectors (Ministerial), 38 Assistant Sub Inspectors and 86 Head Constables.

The Home Minister said he will conduct quarterly reviews of the performance of the police stations to check whether the crime graph in these areas have come down after setting up of police stations.
