Several areas in the Capital reported waterlogging, after heavy showers lashed the city on Sunday night that continued till Monday morning. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), in all, received 95 complaints of waterlogging on Monday from across the city.

At many sites, mud and rubble from the roads, dug up for construction work by the civic agencies, washed away into the drains, clogging them further.

According to the MCD, waterlogging was reported from Tara Apartments, Minto Bridge, Tilak Bridge, Munirka, Andrews Ganj bus stop, Sarita Vihar, Mithapur, Tuglaqababd higher secondary school, Batla House Chowk, Khanpur, Shalimar Bagh main road, Pitampura, Najafgarh, Punjabi Bagh, Vivek Vihar, Sant Nagar opposite Chhatrasal Stadium, Azadpur Colony, Jama Masjid, Ambedkar Stadium and Munirka, among others.

The civic agency claimed that construction work being carried out in the city, choked sewer systems were responsible for the waterlogging. "There are a number of low-lying areas in the city, and they are bound to get flooded once it rains. Also, the water takes some time to make its way in the drains," said a senior MCD official.

The civic body has identified 139 vulnerable points that are prone to waterlogging.

"At all vulnerable locations, permanent pumping stations have been installed by the MCD and portable diesel pump sets are deployed to drain off storm water. The major reasons for waterlogging were power breakdowns and disconnection due to non-payment, traffic congestion among others," said Jagdish Mamgain, chairman of MCD's works committee.
