‘Result was a sweet surprise’

Just two days after he was declared the country topper in Central Board of Secondary Examinations (CBSE) class 12 exams, Dravyansh Sharma cleared the IIT-JEE examination and secured seventh position. The results to the IIT-JEE were declared on Wednesday.

“The result was a sweet surprise. I thought I would be able to achieve a position between the top 25-50 students,” said the Ghaziabad teenager from Mumbai where he is undergoing training at Homi Bhabha Institute of Science.

Top 30 selected students from across the country are training to be selected for the International Chemistry Olympiad to be held in Turkey later this year. Only four will eventually make it to Turkey. Sharma had previously cleared the national-level olympiads in Chemistry and Astronomy.

“I wish to take admission at IIT-Delhi; I have dreamed about it for long. Electronics engineering would be my choice,” he added. A seemingly shy and introvert, Sharma has opened up new dimensions for himself since he topped the NCR-region in class 10 examinations two years back.

Sharma’s long-term goal is to clear the Indian civil services examinations. “I wish to compete for the Indian Administra-tive Service (IAS) examination after I enrol at IIT. My preparations would start soon,” a confident Sharma said.

When asked about the reason, he said, “Contribution towards one’s country is more important to me. I can get a high salary but the satisfaction to serve the country is more important.”

Sharma rates corruption as the number one problem facing the country which, he said, affects the society at large. “This needs to be eradicated for the country to develop. I was very impressed with Anna Hazare’s recent agitation against corruption,” he said.

Sharma’s parents are equally overjoyed. “His discipline to study 6-7 hours at a stretch was the key to his success. We are waiting for a party when he returns on June 4,” said Sharma’s father Dharam Vir Sharma, who is an engineer with Agra Development Authority.

Dravyansh’s pastime includes reading novels and watching movies from genres like action and thrillers. He is also a fan of Shahrukh Khan and Katrina Kaif.
