Taking its fight with the government on rising prices of essential commodities to the streets the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) staged a massive demonstration at Parliament Street on Tuesday.

The police used water cannons to disperse the crowd when the protestors tried to scale the barricades and march towards the Parliament. Several BJP workers sustained injuries and senior BJP leaders were court arrested during the demonstration.
Delhi BJP president Vijyendra Gupta said the policies of the Congress-led UPA government are anti-people and favour only the corporates. “The price of petrol has gone up by R5.50 per litre within a month. Tax on oil in India is highest in the world. If the central government abolishes only customs duty on oil, the prices of petrol, diesel and that of essential commodities will drastically come down,” said Gupta.
To register their protest against spiralling oil prices, a large number of BJP workers used bullock carts and bicycles to reach the Parliament Street where the demonstration was organised.
Addressing the workers, leader of the Opposition in Delhi Assembly Vijay Kumar Malhotra called the UPA government “most irresponsible” and “anti-poor”.
