The Sheila Dikshit government hopes to admit to schools 20,000 children belonging to the economically weaker sections in 2012-13, at least 6,000 more than the number enrolled in the previous year.
In the 2012-13 budget, the government has proposed a cash subsidy of Rs 300 per year for students of Class 4 to purchase stationery. Moreover, a subsidy of Rs 400 has been proposed for students of Classes 4 to 8 in government and aided schools for buying stationery. The chief minister said the scheme would benefit around eight lakh students and the scheme would cost the exchequer Rs 30 crore.To bring government schools on a par ws ith the private ones, the education department will also start "smart classes" in one section of Classes 9 to 12 in all Rajkiya Pratibha Vikas Vidyalayas.
Dikshit has also approved higher rates of scholarship for children belonging to SC, ST, OBC and minority categories. Starting this financial year, students from Classes 1 to 8 in government and aided schools belonging to these categories will get Rs 1,000 stipend every year. Free textbooks and cash subsidies for uniforms ranging from Rs 500 to Rs 900 have also been included in the budget.
The government has also identified around 100 sites for construction of new schools, of which the possession of 90 sites has already taken place. A new scheme, called Yuva Nirman Scheme, is being mulled under which half the tuition fees of professional courses to the EWS category of Delhi state universities will be paid by the government.

{{/usCountry}}The plan expenditure on education in Delhi has increased from Rs 337 crore in 2004-05 to Rs 1,313 crore in 2011-12, a four-fold increase. This year, a provisional budget of Rs 1,901 crore or 12.67% of the total plan outlay has been earmarked for education.
