Hours after a drunk man created panic with a toy pistol outside the office of a Congress MLA, the issue of security for the MLAs - rather the lack of it - hogged the limelight in Delhi assembly. The Assembly summoned the Delhi police chief to the House.

The MLAs refused to carry out any business unless the commissioner was called and the house had to be adjourned thrice on Tuesday. But even after being summoned, the police chief sent joint commissioner northern range Tejinder Luthra on his behalf as he was occupied with something unavoidable. Dissatisfied, the MLAs continued to protest until 5pm, when the police chief finally came.
“There have been incidents of attack on MLAs before too. We had raised the matter with the Union home minister,” said Sheila Dikshit, chief minister of Delhi. She said if such incidents continue to take place, it would be difficult for MLAs to discharge their duties.
But she could not satisfy the Opposition. “The CM had promised that the Delhi government will arrange security for MLAs if Delhi police failed to do so. It is worrisome that the members of the house are being attacked,” said Vijay Kumar Malhotra, leader of the Opposition. htc
