Students of Sardar Patel Vidyalaya have won a grant of Rs 7.5 lakh to implement green initiatives in their school. Part of Green-I 2011 — an initiative that aims to introduce green initiatives in schools — the school was among the 120 participants from all over the country to present a green proposal.
The topic at The Green-I 2011 competition, which is in its fifth year, this time was to create a blueprint to become a green and sustainable campus and also a leader in imparting environmental education.
The finalists included Sardar Patel Vidyalaya, Vasant Valley School, Sri Aurobindo International School, Hyderabad, Sai International School, Bhubaneshwar and Choithram School , Indore.
“Our concept note was very focused. We spoke about an approach that prioritised the inclusion of sustainability and ecological thinking in the curriculum itself,” said Monil Singhal, a class 12 student of Sardar Patel Vidyalaya.
“We believe that students will become conscious about the environment when this initiative is implemented. Also, green building initiatives and green habits will all come through education,” she added.
“Sardar Patel won because they had a focused approach to long-term as well as short-term goals. Quantification of goals is very important. How much you are saving and what this will translate into are two questions that always need to be answered,” said Karan Grover, an architect who focuses on green building initiatives who was also the judge.
