The Supreme Court on Tuesday began hearing the appeal of former Youth Congress leader Sushil Sharma who has challenged his conviction and death sentence for the murder of his wife Naina Sahni in 1995.

A bench headed by Chief Justice P Sathasivam began hearing the appeal filed five years ago. Sharma moved the top court against a Delhi High Court judgment upholding the conviction and death penalty awarded by a trial court.

Sharma killed his wife on suspicion that she was having an affair. He had cut her into pieces after shooting her. In a bid to destroy evidence, he burnt Naina's body pieces in the tandoor of a restaurant at a hotel in New Delhi.

Advocate Jaspal Singh began the arguments on behalf of Sharma by reading out the prosecution evidence.

The high court had on February 19, 2007, confirmed the death penalty awarded to him.
