A day after the CBI filed closure reports in two criminal cases against molester cop SPS Rathore (68), the Supreme Court released him on bail.

The court on Thursday ordered the release of the ex-DGP of Haryana, observing he had already spent six months in jail — after his conviction for molesting Ruchika Girhotra (14) — and that the CBI had closed two other cases against him. Those cases were brought against him by Ruchika’s family, for allegedly slapping false cases against her brother and doctoring her autopsy report.
Ruchika’s family had lodged a third case too, accusing him of abetting her suicide. But the court said the CBI was in the process of closing that case too.
“We don’t know under what consideration the CBI favours Rathore. We will contest the closure report,” Ruchika’s uncle Anand Prakash said.
Ruchika was molested in August 1990, committed suicide three years later. Rathore is serving an 18-month prison sentence of which he has completed six months.
