The Supreme Court on Monday issued notices to dismissed Haryana cadre IPS officer RK Sharma and two others on a Delhi Police petition, challenging their acquittal in the 1999 journalist Shivani Bhatnagar’s murder case.

A bench headed by Justice Aftab Alam issued notices to Sharma, Sri Bhagwan and Satya Prakash after additional solicitor general Haren Raval pointed out that the Delhi High Court overlooked material evidence on record against them on October 12, 2011.
“The Delhi HC has ignored the best pieces of circumstantial evidence,” Raval told the bench, which also included Justice Ranjana P. Desai.
Acting on another petition filed by the Delhi Police, the bench also issued notices to accused Ved Prakash Sharma and Ved alias Kalu, who were acquitted by the trial court and the HC, too, approved the finding.
Shivani Bhatnagar was murdered on January 23, 1999, in her east Delhi apartment.
