Police said unidentified burglars snuck into the house of Manjit Singh, a Supreme Court lawyer, and decamped with cash and jewellery worth around R50 lakh in the wee hours of Monday.

The burglary took place at Singh's Abul Fazal Road, Bengali Market residence that falls under the territorial jurisdiction of the Barakhamba Road police station. Singh's wife is also a lawyer in the Supreme Court. The matter, a senior police officer said, came to their notice late Monday morning after Singh lodged a complaint at the local police station.

"The couple lives with their children on the first floor of the house while the ground floor serves as their office. Singh's complaint said the family found their ground floor office and their children's room were ransacked when they woke up around 6.30am," said the officer.

In their children's bedroom, Singh's wife had kept jewellery items worth over R40 lakh, besides R7 lakh in cash missing in an almirah. All these things were missing, the complaint said.

"Singh said the drawer of his employee was broken and R22,000 kept inside it was missing. The burglars also took away R50,000 kept in an envelope in Singh's personal drawer," said the officer.

Police also said the burglars had sneaked into the house through a window which was close properly in the night but was found ajar in the morning.
